Synopsis
Facing a disagreement about a patient’s treatment plan? Unsure how to inform staff about potential redundancies? Unclear how to resolve a dispute between colleagues? When the stakes are high, emotions are strong and opinions can be opposed. Anyone that has worked in a veterinary practice has likely experienced disagreement and uncertainty on how to deal with a situation. It can feel frustrating, upsetting and stressful. To move forward in these situations requires a ‘Crucial Conversation’. This session explores the key principles of ‘Crucial Conversations,’ the model established by Joseph Grenny, Kerry Paterson, Ron McMillan, Al Switzler and Emily Gregory. Through real life examples, Graeme will offer practical strategies to navigate these discussions with confidence and skill. We’ll delve into the consequences of unresolved disagreement, provide guidance on tackling awkward topics, and learn techniques to manage our emotions and foster open dialogue.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand what Crucial Conversations are and recognise the consequences (positive and negative) of handling them effectively or ineffectively
- Recognise your own emotional and behavioural responses to crucial conversations and learn techniques to establish safety in a conversation by building trust and mutual respect
- Learn to create clear action plans and follow-up strategies after crucial conversations to ensure accountability and progress
