It is with great sadness that SPVS has learnt of the passing of Des Thompson, a past President of SPVS and practitioner from Northern Ireland.

Des was small in stature but a giant in the Veterinary profession. He held many offices in many associations and was well known but more importantly well-loved, due to his support and commitment to veterinary life, particularly to SPVS.

His support and enthusiasm for SPVS activities was unquestionable. Des joined SPVS Council in 1983 and was President 1992-93. He played an active role in the SPVS Lancaster Final Year Student Conference, attending from the first event in 1987 right through to 2017. Des is probably best known for his unfailing encouragement, kindness and support for all those who come into contact with him, especially those just entering the profession, helping many new vets find their feet in the real world of practice.

Throughout his career he was an advocate of clinical excellence and education, leading by example in his practice and speaking at numerous educational events including BSAVA, BVA and WSAVA Congresses. Recognition for his work included the BSAVA Melton Award for services to Small Animal Practice and in 2014 he was the first recipient of the RCVS Queen’s Medal. Des was also a founder member of the SPVS Masters Group, looking at veterinary post-graduate education.

All at SPVS send our condolences to Rosalie and family.
