The first session focused on Succession Planning, led by Pete Orpin, Chair of SPVS and consultant for Anval Ltd. He shared his insights on the challenges and solutions for successful succession planning in practice. Often, more time is spent planning holidays than securing the long-term future of a practice. Simply wanting to remain independently owned is not enough.
Succession planning is frequently considered too late, leading to difficult conversations and overly personalized decisions. It’s crucial to address various factors such as age, retirement gaps, part-time work, partner inductions, and funding. Open, transparent conversations during strategic planning days, with external facilitators and specialist financial advice from accountants, are beneficial.
