Not Another Meeting!

Not Another Meeting!

It was apparently Aesop who first observed, ‘after all is said and done, more is said than done.’ Most of the meetings I have attended have borne this out, and our own SPVS Board meetings are no exception!

As vets we all lead busy lives, and so means of communicating remotely can be a real boon. The SPVS email discussion list is an active community where a core of the 300-odd members share information and discuss problems while many more listen in to pick up valuable hints and tips.

Online, the SPVS Facebook page is growing too. It has over 600 ‘likes’ and provides a platform for us to engage with the wider profession, but it is dwarfed by the recently set up Vets: Stay, Go or Diversify (V:SGD) page which now has over 9,000 followers.

Online groups like V:SGD and Veterinary Voices have clearly struck a chord with professionals seeking answers to a clinical conundrum, exploring career options or simply sharing a joke. So it was fascinating, and a real privilege to attend the recent live event that V:SGD organised on London. Some 250 delegates came together at a friendly and stimulating event that was a real credit to  Ebony Escalona – the group’s founder – and her team. For me there was a great buzz as I and other vets chatted with people we might previously only have known through a Facebook post.

In many ways, I suspect the live event was an inevitability, given the group’s online success.  Because there really is no substitute for meeting face-to-face. It allows us to get to know and respect the person behind the idea or opinion, to build relationships and feel part of a community in a way that remote communication never can.

So I hope I’ll get to meet more of you throughout the year at various SPVS events. Maybe some of you will join me for one of the President’s Peaks walks as we travel around the country. And you know what, even the SPVS Board meetings have their uses. Just hand me my gavel!
